Importance of Play and games in Preschool Learning

Burning issues in childhood learning:

Preschool has become more like hand to glove with elementary school. Elementary school expects the child to learn certain skills before they start with Kindergarten. Preschool becomes the absolute necessity in such educational environment. However preschool learning needs to follow a much unique approach. You can’t directly forward the rigorousness of preschool to children. The children should feel more free and relaxed. They should fit into the setup pretty naturally for their age.

What preschool teachers should understand?

Children are playful. It is not their weakness. It’s just their inherent nature. They play with themselves in toddler years and eventually start playing with others. Only after the age of two, a child starts having adequate interaction with others. A teacher should facilitate interactions by setting up space for two or more. He/she should help them find words to expresses themselves at an early age. The curriculum structure of preschool learning should be different than fourth or fifth grade.

Play and learn is the mantra:

Play is an effective tool in preschool learning. Children develop skills effortlessly through play. Physical aspect of play includes improving motor skills, hand to eye coordination, etc… Language skills can be addressed through cooperative play. Children start interacting with others during the preschool years. Play helps build self-esteem and self-confidence. The self-concept cannot be addressed better before the age of five. Play alone can help a child in challenging tasks such as listening, compromising and negotiating.

Types of Play:

Children’s play can vaguely be put into four different categories. Dramatic play involves fantasy related activities where players assume roles. Children dress up in costumes and represent characters from stories. Manipulative play makes players build objects with help of smaller toys. Physical play is energy driven, where player use whole body in activities. Classic examples are fancy running, skipping, balls, custom structures etc… The last in the list is creative category, where usage of art materials in involved.

What parents have to learn?

Tour plenty of playschools in your area. Enquire about their philosophy of preschool learning. Examine how much of an integral part is play in their philosophy. Explore the prepared spaces, play structures and teaching objects. Communicate with the teachers and staff to see their viewpoint of preschool. Your goal should be to ensure that, the playschool indulges play and encourages interaction. The preschool must be a happy place for your loved ones.
